Rwenzori Mountains
The Mountains of the Moon – exotic and demanding
The Mountains of the Moon – for the adventurous.
The Rwenzori Mountains are known as the Mountains of the Moon and are located mainly in southwestern Uganda, along the border between Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. These are the highest mountain ranges in Africa and the highest mountains in Uganda. Rising higher than the Alps, the Rwenzori are also glaciated.
Mount Stanley is located within the park, and its Margherita Peak—one of Mount Stanley’s twin summits—is Africa’s fourth-highest peak at 5,109 meters. Africa’s fourth- and fifth-highest peaks, Mount Speke and Mount Baker, are also found in the park. Visiting these mountains, and trekking through their dramatic slopes, is among the most exciting experiences you can ever have.
There are primarily two ascent routes in the Rwenzori Mountains: the Kilembe Route and the Central Circuit Route.
